Arriving in the UK as a student: your first two weeks of mobile data

A bridge eSIM for landing, then a UK pay-as-you-go SIM for the year. Which to buy, when to switch, and what needs a UK number.

Buy a 14-day UK eSIM before you fly. It gets you from Heathrow to your halls, through the first bank appointment and the BRP collection, without a queue. Then switch to a UK SIM in week two.

Why not just a UK SIM from day one?

You can order a free Giffgaff, Lebara or Voxi SIM to your halls address, but it arrives after you do. Airport SIM kiosks charge two to three times the online price. The eSIM covers the gap.

What needs a UK number

  • Bank account opening (Monzo, Starling, HSBC student accounts all verify by UK SMS).
  • NHS GP registration and the NHS app.
  • University two-factor sign-in on some campuses.
  • Deliveroo, Uber and most delivery apps.

Switching in week two

  1. Order the UK SIM to your halls the day you get the address.
  2. Activate it online and set it as the default line for calls and SMS.
  3. Keep the eSIM as data until it runs out, then delete the profile.
  4. Keep your Indian or Pakistani SIM in the phone for home OTPs; put it on a zero-rent or long-validity pack before you leave.
